Let me start by asking, who doesn't want a pet? Oh come on now, you know you do. That adorable little puppy is just so cute and cuddly, and it is just going to love you to pieces no matter what. It will snuggle with you and play fetch for hours on end. I mean who wouldn't want that, right? I know I was in love with the idea of a pet. My husband and I had been discussing getting a dog since we got married. We both grew up with dogs, and since we wanted a pet of the warm blooded variety, and I am allergic to cats; a puppy seemed like the natural choice.
We put off getting a puppy for a year and a half while we were living in a small apartment after getting married because we didn't think we had enough room for a puppy to really thrive. OK well my husband successfully put it off. I seriously contemplated getting a dog on a few occasions. If we don't have a lot of room, that just means we should get a smaller dog. Unfortunately that logic didn't work on him. But once we moved into our house with a fenced in back yard (pre-planning on my part of course), watch out. I was bound and determined to get a dog.
After many attempts to convince my husband that we really, really needed a puppy, some of which may or may not have included PowerPoint and Excel spreadsheet backup (more on my nerdliness in the future), I finally succeeded in badgering my husband into agreement. So we decided to get a dog. Yay! But now what type of dog. There are just so many cute dogs, too many cute dogs in fact! My husband definitely didn't want a little yippy dog and wouldn't seriously entertain any little dog options. I admittedly am kind of frightened by big dogs, i.e. those that are any more than about 25% of my size. Something about being knocked over and mauled a la Cujo. So we decided to go with a medium sized dog.
While that range definitely gives a few good options, we quickly honed in on beagles. Why you ask? Well they have a good temperament, didn't seem to be prone to too many scary diseases, and are pretty sturdy
